href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/pznnCR5z951uHNSr7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The cathedral<\/a> <\/strong>is certainly one of the town\u2019s oldest buildings.<\/p>\n<p>According to legend, it rises on the ruins of an old temple dedicated to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Felicitas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the Goddess of Happiness<\/strong><\/a> built by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pliny_the_Younger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Pliny the Younger<\/strong><\/a> in the 1st century CE.<\/p>\n<p>The perimeter of the old temple is visible on the crypt floor.<\/p>\n<p>The beginnings of the cathedral go back to <strong>the patron<\/strong> saint of Citt\u00e0 di Castello, <strong>St. Florido<\/strong>, who with <strong>St. Amantius<\/strong> rebuilt the town after a siege by the Goths in 542 CE.<\/p>\n<p>The Cathedral has been modified and restored many times over the centuries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The round bell tower<\/strong> is testimony to the restoration work done in the 9th century, while the north side and its portal date back to the late 14th century.<\/p>\n<p>The current appearance of the Cathedral was created <strong>during the Renaissance<\/strong> from 1494 to 1529.<\/p>\n<p>The 17th-century fa\u00e7ade is unfinished and the main staircase was built in the late 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>The basilica was planned on a Latin Cross and has a central nave with side chapels.<\/p>\n<p>The 17th-century panelled ceiling, with its cornices, friezes and rose windows, was created by local masters.<\/p>\n<p>The floor and baptistery were realised in the early 1800s by <strong>masters from rel=\"noopener\"><strong>This monumental church<\/strong><\/a> is a large and imposing building with one nave and a <strong>trussed roof<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The fa\u00e7ade is unfinished and the portal on the left side dates back to the 1400&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>As you enter the church, you are <strong>immediately struck<\/strong> by the sheer size of the interior and the austerity of the medieval architecture, which was restored in the early 1900&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>The church contains <strong>several partially ruined frescos<\/strong> attributed to masters of the schools in Umbria and data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The church dates back to the 14th century and has <strong>preserved its original Latin Cross plan<\/strong> and various external elements from that period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 18th century restoration<\/strong> work is especially evident inside, where it was completely redone in a baroque style between 1707 and 1718.<\/p>\n<p>During the <strong>Renaissance<\/strong>, the church contained works by major artists of that time: <strong>Raphael<\/strong> painted a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pinacotecabrera.org\/en\/collezione-online\/opere\/the-marriage-of-the-virgin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Marriage of the Virgin<\/strong><\/a>\u201d for the Franciscans (now in the Brera Museum in Milan), <strong>Luca Signorelli<\/strong> painted an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adoration_of_the_Shepherds_(Signorelli)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Adoration of the Shepherds<\/strong><\/a>\u201d (now in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgallery.org.uk\/paintings\/luca-signorelli-the-adoration-of-the-shepherds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>National Gallery in London<\/strong><\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giorgio_Vasari\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Giorgio Vasari<\/strong><\/a> created a Chapel for <strong>Vitelli Family<\/strong> (the first on With the terrible earthquake of 1789 it suffered serious damage and the facade of the church was completely redone reflecting the canons of neoclassicism.<\/p>\n<p>The cloister is the heart of the monastery not only for its mystical value, but also for architectural solutions and details that combine, with great mastery, beauty and functionality. It gives harmony, beauty and light to the internal spaces and is central to the life of the community.<\/p>\n<p>From the cloister to the east, you can access the hortus conclusus. In the garden, marked out in squares by paths, aromatic herbs and vegetables grow.<\/p>\n<p>To the south, to the right of the cordonata, there are the tubs that were once used for laundry.<\/p>\n<p>On this side, in addition to the fruit trees, there is also a small chicken coop dating back to the time of the foundation and which still serves today for the sustenance of the monastery.<\/p>\n<p>There is no shortage of flowers with a high symbolic value and the whole thing returns a simple care of the greenery that brings back the memory of that ancient botanical wisdom that makes the garden, even
